I live in USA in Takoma Park, suburb of Washington, D.C. Age, I'm "thirty-something." First heard Mary about '89 or 90. I was standing in a music store and the first song I ever heard by her was "I say a little prayer". I've seen Mary four times in concert but I've never met her, but I do have a story about the last time I saw her show. It nearly didn't happen, here it is: I usually attend concerts with my cousin, after I discovered Mary ,I loaned the tapes to my cousin telling her "you've got to hear this singer!" Knowing good music when she hears it she became hooked as well. We went to that first concert together at the Lincoln and two at the Birchmere. We were getting to be tired mid-thirties and mid-forties ladies with work and a child to raise and her last show was on a weeknight and during a time that my cousin was very busy (she's an attorney) and very behind. So she said she'd catch Mary nextime. SHE IS THE ONE WITH THE CAR! Meaning I had no transportation around the beltway to Virginia. So here's what I did. I hung a few notices in the bookstore and community boards in Takoma Park and bartered for a ride to the show. Read something like this: IS THERE A MARY BLACK FAN IN TAKOMA PARK? I'll buy your ticket to the show if you get me there and back. Gas to Virginia and whatever you eat is on you and the concert is on me. I got a phone call that same day, had a nice introductory lunch with a very nice woman and worked out all the arrangements. So I made the show afterall and it was one of the best because she sang Fields of Gold. I've never exerted such effort to catch anybody else.( Except when I was much younger and bought a scalped ticket to see Michael Jackson.)
