Early in 1993, Derry-born, London-based Frank Gallagher was recommended to Mary Black as a possible new band member. Two days later, he was in the studio recording The Holy Ground, and soon after set off to tour the States. A multi-talented fiddle, keyboard and whistle player, Frank has a classical musical training from Queen's University Belfast, where he tok an M.A., he's spent some six years working as musical arranger for Phil Coulter, touring and recording extensively with is orchestra, and he's also served as musical director in tours featuring Billy Connolly and Ralph McTell. He's even combined his classical training with his love of Irish folk music (developed during his early days in and around Donegal) by conducting the Wen Orchestra in concert with The Chieftains at the Royal Albert Hall. Last year, he became involved in writing music for telvision, and was commissioned to create scores for three series including the BBC2 Borderlines documentary programme. He hopes to expand this side of his career, and currently has a number of TV projects underway. Meanwhile with Mary Black he's providing the kind of exciting combination of traditional, contemporary and classical styles which so characterise the sound of the band. Currently, Frank is no longer part of Mary's band |
