Dublin-born Carl is the longest serving member of Mary's band. In 1985, he got a call to do a session with Mary, then played on her next album, and has been an integral part of the operation ever since. Carl began his musical career in the inauspicious depths of a military band, having started to learn the clarinet when he was just ten years old. He turned professional at the tender age of fifteen, and fast became established in the circuit performing with pop and show bands backing stars such as Shirley Bassey and Eartha Kitt during their Dublin concert hall appearances. To listen to Carl you'd think his life was one long round of recording jingles and sessions, but his depth and breadth of experience extends far beyond fifteen second commercials and anonymous backings. He played for eight years with Rob Strong (father of Andrew Strong of the "Commitments" fame) and subsequently provided the stunning sax on the film sound-track. He's toured Ireland with the American drifters, Frankie Lane and Guy Mitchell, and has recorded with the likes of Terence Trent D'Arby, Paul Brady and Johnny Logan. It's a list of credits which stands as testimony to Carl Geraghty's standing, and he skills he's displayed with Mary Black over the past ten years confirm that he's an outstanding saxophonist who's made an exceptional contribution to the band.
