Garvan Gallagher says self-depreciatingly that no one would remember any of the bands he knocked around with in the city of Dublin where he was born and bred and is still based. But the fourty-two year-old bass player, who's played with Mary's band since 1987, used to be part of Midnight Well - a band which Mary much admired and whose front man Thom Moore now provides some of Mary's most striking contemporary material. From jazz rock (Metropolis) to country (The Fleadh Cowboys) and all the way back through traditional folk (The Clancy Brothers) Garvans extensive experience as a professional musician since 1973 has taken a wide variety of styles and covered tours right round the U.K. And the whole of Europe. He's also an accomplished composer in a rather different field, having written the music for Bosco, a children's TV programme in Ireland which stopped recording in 1986 but still tops the ratings today. He's now been part of Mary's line-up for several years, and has featured in all the tours and albums during that time. So even if it were true that no one could remember the names of the bands he's worked with before (which it isn't), there's very little likelihood that anyone could forget what Garvan Gallagher's been up to since 1987. Currently, Garvan is no longer part of Mary's band |
